Napoli Stars Politano & Spinazzola Discuss Lukaku's 'Difficult Time' After Crucial Milan Win
Napoli forward Matteo Politano has confirmed that the squad harbours "no issues" with striker Romelu Lukaku. Teammate Leonardo Spinazzola added a personal touch, describing the Belgian as a "gentle giant" navigating a "truly challenging period" in his private life.
This clarification from the players follows Napoli's significant 1-0 victory over AC Milan on Monday evening, a result that moved them into second place in the league standings, seven points adrift of current leaders Inter.
Politano's Decisive Goal and Post-Match Reflections
Politano, an Italy international, made a decisive impact coming off the bench, netting the winning goal for the Partenopei. His celebration was met with an emotional embrace from fellow Italian and long-time friend, Spinazzola.
"Our friendship spans over 15 years; we grew up together and reconnected here," Politano remarked in a post-match interview. He dedicated his goal, saying, "Today is the birthday of both one of my closest friends and my sister, so I dedicate this goal to them."
Napoli's attacking lineup against the Rossoneri was notably without a natural centre-forward. Rasmus Hojlund was sidelined due to illness, and Romelu Lukaku remained unavailable, having stayed in Belgium for individual training during and after the international break.
Politano addressed the situation surrounding Lukaku directly: "We have no issues with Romelu; he has always shown good conduct towards us, and we remain in contact. His situation is a matter between him and the club, for them to resolve."
Spinazzola offered a deeper insight into Lukaku's current state: "This has truly been a tough period for Rom; he recently lost his father. While he might appear outwardly strong, he's genuinely a gentle giant, a big softie at heart. We've spoken extensively, and I understand the depth of his suffering. My greatest hope is for him that this difficult phase passes soon."
The experienced full-back also touched upon his strong bond with Politano and recalled Italy's recent heartbreaking World Cup play-off elimination, an experience both players shared as part of the Azzurri squad.
"We went through something terrible together just days ago, but that's the nature of football," he reflected. "Today, there was a significant reaction from the entire team. Before Matteo stepped onto the pitch, I told him he would be the decider, as Milan tends to be his favourite opponent."
"We firmly believe we can win every game. We'll see where that takes us, but we are confident in our ability to string together a series of victories. Today's win was crucial for securing a Champions League spot; we'll assess our position come May 25."
Napoli's next fixture is an away match against Parma on Sunday, while league leaders Inter will travel to face Como on the same day.
