Pio Esposito Expresses Regret After Inter Draw, Calls for National Unity for Italy's World Cup Bid

Francesco Pio Esposito voiced his disappointment regarding Inter's 1-1 draw against Fiorentina, despite having scored a crucial goal. He also delivered an important message to fans concerning Italy's upcoming World Cup play-off.

The match at Stadio Artemio Franchi proved to be a chaotic yet exciting spectacle. It began spectacularly with Esposito finding the net just 40 seconds into the game, converting Nicolò Barella's cross with an unchallenged header.

During the match, both teams had goals disallowed for offside. Fiorentina eventually equalized through Cher Ndour, who followed up on a rebound after Yann Sommer had saved an initial attempt from Albert Gudmundsson.

Esposito Reflects on Performance for Inter

Speaking to DAZN Italia, Esposito expressed his disappointment:

“I leave here with regrets, particularly concerning that final chance.”

He was referring to David De Gea's stoppage-time save on his shot.

“De Gea did an excellent job anticipating my move. Perhaps I could have done more, but that's how it played out.”

Esposito possesses a rare set of attributes for an Italian centre-forward, a quality particularly valuable now that Atalanta's Gianluca Scamacca is sidelined with an injury.

“I believe my primary strength lies in my ability to get into the box and win headers. Therefore, I'm always pleased when the team delivers quality crosses, similar to Barella's.”

This draw has tightened the title race, placing AC Milan within six points of league leaders Inter. Napoli also remains a contender, just seven points behind the Nerazzurri with eight matches remaining in the season.

Conversely, Fiorentina finds itself in 16th position, precariously just two points above both Lecce and Cremonese, who currently occupy the relegation spots.

Esposito is now set to make the short journey – approximately 2 kilometers from Stadio Artemio Franchi – to the Coverciano training camp, where he will join Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy national squad.

When asked if he had a message for the fans ahead of Italy's critical 2026 World Cup play-off against Northern Ireland, Esposito stressed the importance of national unity.

“I implore everyone to set aside their club allegiances and unite for the sake of Italy. The national team plays on Thursday, and that is what truly matters most.”

Should Italy triumph in that match, they will then proceed to face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-off final.
