Political Turmoil Threatens San Siro Sale to Inter and Milan
Italy's leading political party has initiated a move to invalidate the sale of San Siro to football clubs Inter and Milan. This development follows an ongoing investigation into the stadium's contentious situation.
For ten years, various proposals for the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza were debated, introduced, discarded, and refined. Eventually, the two Milanese giants finalized the acquisition of the land surrounding the stadium in the San Siro district.
San Siro's Future Remains Uncertain
In November 2025, the clubs concluded a €200 million deal to construct a new stadium on what currently serves as a car park. Their long-term plans included either demolishing the historic venue or extensively renovating it.
However, these plans are now in jeopardy. The offices of the Milan city council recently underwent a raid by Italian financial police, who are probing allegations of bid-rigging and collusion related to the sale.
In response, Fratelli d’Italia, the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and a key opposition force in Milan, has formally called for the annulment of the San Siro sale and demanded the resignation of Mayor Giuseppe Sala. The party has consistently opposed the sale, advocating instead for the refurbishment of the existing stadium, despite the logistical challenges posed by the clubs' demanding match schedules.
