Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi experienced a challenging start to his tenure at Tottenham Hotspur, marking his debut with a defeat that has left the team struggling in the Premier League relegation zone.

The former coach for Sassuolo, Benevento, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Olympique Marseille was brought in during the international break following the dismissal of Igor Tudor. De Zerbi is the third manager to take charge of Spurs this season, highlighting the significant task of turning the club's fortunes around. He has, however, committed to a long-term contract, signaling the club's faith in his vision.

Tottenham's Defeat on De Zerbi's Debut

De Zerbi's initial outing with Tottenham proved to be a nightmare scenario. The team suffered a narrow 1-0 loss away against Sunderland, with Nordi Mukiele scoring the decisive goal.

This result extends Tottenham's winless streak in the Premier League to 14 games, a run that dates back to their victory over Crystal Palace on December 28th. This is the club's longest such streak since 1935.

Speaking after the match, De Zerbi expressed his approach to the team: "I can be a big brother, a father; they don't need a coach," he told BBC Sport. "They don't need to improve their football. They can play better, and they will play better once we reach a different level of confidence. I'm sure if we are able to win a game, then everything will change."

Adding to the frustration, former Serie A defender Cristian Romero was forced off the pitch in tears due to an injury, which could potentially end his season prematurely.

De Zerbi now joins a list of managers, including Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, who have faced considerable difficulties at Tottenham. He is the latest to confront a club seemingly plagued by persistent issues.
