Shevchenko: 'Don’t believe' what they say about Pulisic, Milan can reopen title race
Andriy Shevchenko believes AC Milan could reignite their Serie A title aspirations if they secure a victory against Inter tonight. He also dismisses claims that Christian Pulisic is preoccupied with the upcoming World Cup with the USMNT.
The former Milan icon shared his thoughts in an interview preceding the Derby della Madonnina clash between the Rossoneri and their city rivals, Inter.
"The current ten-point difference in the standings isn't a significant barrier," Shevchenko asserted. "Should Milan emerge victorious, the championship race will be wide open once more. A derby match holds the power to alter trajectories, particularly at this critical juncture of the season. Every game moving forward will be unpredictable for all teams."
Inter currently leads Serie A convincingly, establishing themselves as Italy's top side. "Yes, as a collective, they are presently the best in Italy," the former Milan forward commented, "and I admire Chivu's coaching approach. He always displayed intelligence, even during his playing career, showing creativity on the pitch. He's proving to be an effective coach; his team clearly respects him and exhibits an appealing style of play."
Milan holds the second spot, having suffered only two Serie A defeats this season under their current manager.
"Their coach is a reliable figure. He has transformed Milan," Shevchenko stated. "He instilled a competitive spirit in the squad and enhanced individual players' abilities. With his experience and distinct qualities, he molds the group with his vision, proving himself a formidable manager."
Christian Pulisic enjoyed an excellent start to the season but has yet to find the net in 2026. The American talent has faced intermittent playing time over the first quarter of the year due to recurring injury setbacks, including bursitis.
"Dismiss any notions that a player of Pulisic's caliber is already contemplating the World Cup; it's simply not possible," Shevchenko asserted. "Whenever a player steps onto the field, their sole focus is to perform at their absolute peak in that moment. Pulisic has delivered crucial goals and will undoubtedly continue to do so, first for Milan and subsequently for the USMNT at the World Cup."
Rafael Leao is set to join Pulisic in Milan's attacking lineup for tonight's match.
"Rafa is demonstrating significant maturity," Shevchenko observed. "He strives to excel in a position that isn't his natural fit, adapting to the coach's tactical requirements. Capello's assessment is accurate; he isn't a traditional center-forward, yet he capably executes his duties, exploiting space and remaining alert. In strategies emphasizing rapid counter-attacks, Rafa's bursts of speed are crucial. However, one shouldn't expect him to hold up play or operate as a classic number nine like Ibrahimovic, as his skill set is distinct."
