Soulé: ‘I couldn’t keep going like this, important Inter-Roma’

Matias Soulé has opened up about the personal realization that he 'couldn't continue' playing while relying on anti-inflammatory medication, as he prepares for his return to action in Roma's pivotal away fixture against Inter.

The highly anticipated match is scheduled to kick off at San Siro at 7:45 PM UK time (8:45 PM CEST).

Before the international break, the Giallorossi secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Lecce, a result that keeps them three points behind fourth-placed Como in the race for those coveted Champions League qualification spots.

Soulé's Comeback After Extended Absence

Speaking about his recent absence, Soulé stated, “I was naturally disappointed not to be fully fit for the previous matches, but my teammates truly gave their all, especially considering the significant number of injuries we're facing.” He added, “We are determined to secure a positive result tonight, which is crucial for our standing in Serie A, given the intense competition for Champions League places. Facing Inter, who are vying for the Scudetto, promises to be a fascinating contest.”

Soulé's return marks his first appearance since February 15th. However, Roma continues to grapple with an extensive injury list; Wesley sustained a muscular injury while on international duty with Brazil and is expected to be sidelined for a month. For two or three months, I was playing constantly reliant on anti-inflammatories, and it was after the Napoli game that I truly understood I simply couldn't continue in that manner.” He continued, “I've focused on my training, and although the lesion isn't entirely healed, I feel much improved today. My hope is to contribute positively to my teammates and our supporters tonight.”

Historically, Roma has faced challenges in high-profile matches. Their last encounter with Inter saw them suffer a 1-0 home defeat, despite putting in a robust performance. Reflecting on that game, Soulé remarked, “We played exceptionally well last time we faced Inter; we conceded a goal that could have been avoided but subsequently created numerous opportunities to level the score.
