Tensions Mount Between Italy's Potential Play-off Opponents Over Cooper-Tahirovic Dispute
Ahead of the impending World Cup play-offs, heightened tensions have emerged between Wales and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy's potential adversaries in the final. The dispute centers on an alleged incident involving Brondby's head coach, Steve Cooper, and midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic.
Why are Italy’s potential play-off opponents, Wales and Bosnia, arguing?
Italy is set to play Northern Ireland in their World Cup play-off semi-final in Bergamo on Thursday. The victor will advance to face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in a single-leg play-off final, vying for a coveted spot in the main tournament.
As semi-final preparations intensify, the Bosnian football federation has formally complained about Brondby's Welsh head coach, Steve Cooper. Cooper stands accused of deliberately benching midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic to disrupt his form ahead of the crucial Wales vs. Bosnia encounter in Cardiff. Tahirovic, a regular starter for Brondby during the first half of the 2025-26 season, has played only 13 minutes across his team's last four matches leading up to the play-offs.
Bosnia's head coach, Sergej Barbarez, further fueled the controversy, stating, "Tahirovic shared details with me that are almost unbelievable, concerning his coach's nationality." Barbarez added that Tahirovic was allegedly wished good luck for all his endeavors, "but not for the national team," and was reportedly assured that "everything would return to normal after the break."
In response, Brondby's press officer, Soren Hanghoj, clarified that Tahirovic's exclusion was due to disciplinary issues, emphasizing that the decision was a club-wide one, not solely made by coach Cooper. It is also reported that Tahirovic has since communicated with Cooper, explaining that his earlier statements were "misunderstood."
