Sandro Tonali has disclosed that he engaged in a conversation lasting nearly two hours with Roberto De Zerbi prior to his transfer to Tottenham. Concurrently, Newcastle United has announced that the sale of the Italian midfielder represents the "second-largest fee ever received for a player" in the club's history.

Tottenham and Newcastle officially confirmed Tonali's move to North London on Monday morning. The Italian midfielder shared his initial thoughts as a Spurs player in his first interview on the club's official website.

"I am very happy to be here. When I arrived at the Club today, it felt fantastic. There were discussions about four or five clubs, but there was only one that mattered," stated the Italian international.

Tonali Discusses Tottenham Transfer and Conversation with De Zerbi

"I spoke with the Head Coach for close to two hours about the Club, the fans, the stadium, and our style of play. It felt magical because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. I have played against Tottenham several times and have always experienced a great atmosphere created by passionate fans. I am eagerly anticipating the start of the season."

The strong connection with fellow Italian coach De Zerbi evidently played a significant role in Tonali's decision to relocate to North London.

Tonali hails from Lodi, while De Zerbi originates from Brescia, both towns located in the Lombardy region, separated by only 80 kilometers, approximately an hour's drive apart.

Both individuals were associated with Brescia during different periods of their careers. While De Zerbi is a product of the Milan Academy who never made his senior debut for the Rossoneri, Tonali did play for AC Milan's first team and contributed to their Scudetto victory in the 2021-22 season.

"Sandro is a special player and a significant acquisition for our Club," remarked De Zerbi.

"I have followed him for a considerable time, ever since he emerged from the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I am overjoyed to be working with him now. Given his qualities, there was substantial interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was unequivocal in his desire to join Tottenham, and I am confident our fans will appreciate what he brings to the team."

The reported value of the deal is €115 million, including add-ons, making Tonali the most expensive Italian footballer ever.

While the official transfer fee has not been disclosed, Newcastle has confirmed that Tonali's sale represents the "second-largest fee ever received for a player" in the club's history.
