Zola: Italy Must Rebuild Youth Football from the Ground Up
Gianfranco Zola has issued a passionate plea for a complete re-evaluation of how Italian football nurtures its young talent. He stressed that without addressing deep-seated structural issues, the nation risks enduring the heartbreak of missing yet another World Cup – a third consecutive absence.
Speaking in his capacity as vice-president of Lega Pro, ahead of the Serie C Coppa Italia final between Latina and Potenza, the former Chelsea and Italy star was visibly impacted by the recent penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia. He used the platform to deliver a message extending far beyond the immediate result.
"The failure to qualify for the World Cup is something we feel profoundly," Zola shared with Rai Sport. "Football holds immense importance here, and what transpired yesterday has truly affected me. We must confront this problem head-on and commit to resolving it, recognizing the paramount importance of our young players."
Zola Emphasizes Ground-Up Approach for Italy
Zola made it clear that lasting solutions must originate from the very foundations of the game, rather than relying on superficial fixes at the international level.
"We need to begin from the ground up and focus on creating the optimal conditions to cultivate quality among our young athletes," he affirmed. "This requires a significant and extensive undertaking." He further emphasized the critical need for consistency in young players' development, advocating for continuous opportunities to compete rather than being sidelined at club level.
As Lega Pro's vice-president, Zola is directly invested in this process and highlighted the crucial role the third tier of Italian football can play.
"Within Lega Pro, we are continuously striving to encourage clubs to increase their investment in the best possible development of our young players," he stated.
He concluded his remarks with a direct message to the aspiring generation: "While coaches and facilities are essential, the players themselves must also demonstrate immense dedication. Commitment, passion, and hard work are the qualities needed to become true sportspeople."
